The National Movement of Serbia (NPS) today condemned the inhumanity, negligence and complete irresponsibility of the institutions that led to the tragic scenes from the Zoo on Palić, where animals die in agony, exposed to inadequate conditions, without proper veterinary care and professional supervision, which is why it demands an urgent investigation into the condition of the Zoo.

The President of the Departmental Committee for Agriculture of the NPS, Katarina Jelisavčić, pointed out that this is the result of long-term systemic neglect, lack of control, and the complete absence of responsibility of those who manage public institutions and budget funds, the NPS announced.

She recalled warnings months ago about serious deficiencies in the Draft Law on Animal Welfare, which apparently, she added, does not provide real protection, but serves as a form without substance.

“Where are the funds intended for zoos and animal protection? Who is responsible for controlling the conditions in which the animals are kept? Where are the professional staff – veterinarians, biologists and inspectors, and why did they not react in time? Why are the institutions silent while the suffering and dying of animals unfold in front of the public’s eyes,” Jelisavcic asked.

The National Movement of Serbia demands an urgent and independent investigation into the situation in the Palić Zoo and the determination of individual and institutional responsibility, the immediate rehabilitation of the conditions in which the animals are found and the involvement of professional services, public and transparent control of the spending of budget funds intended for zoos, and the amendment of legal solutions that will guarantee real, not declarative, protection of animal welfare.

“The silence of the institutions is complicity, and every day without a reaction means new suffering and new victims. A society that does not protect the weakest, be it people or animals, shows a deep moral and institutional crisis,” said Katarina Jelisavčić.
