As part of the works for the EXPO complex in Surčin, which include business and residential zones, as well as public infrastructure, with a total value of 2.5 billion euros, there is no provision for waste water treatment, the director of the Center for Local Self-Government, Nikola Jovanović, said today.
“The EXPO will temporarily bring thousands of visitors a day, but with already thousands of employees and tenants in the new apartment blocks, which generates huge amounts of municipal wastewater. The Surčin area coincides with the Belgrade water source, has a network of canals, such as Galovica, which are already burdened with pollution. Without treatment, the additional burden would mean the direct discharge of fecal and industrial water into those canals and into the Sava,” said Jovanović.
He added that, regardless of the uncertain economic effects, the EXPO can have extremely negative ecological, sanitary and health effects for Belgrade, if there is no provision for wastewater processing.
